Ecclesiastical is the insurer of choice for the Anglican Diocese of Ottawa and their Risk Control specialists have performed inspections and valuations at over 70 of our churches.
Risk Control and More
Ecclesiastical is the insurer of choice for the Anglican Diocese of Ottawa and their Risk Control specialists have performed inspections and valuations at over 70 of our churches. Comprehensive follow-up reports have included a wide range of valuable and important risk control recommendations. Our administrative office is now located in a heritage property adjacent to Christ Church Anglican Cathedral. Recently, having leased a section of the property to a developer and with heavy construction in progress, we had some additional questions for Chris Eden, Ecclesiastical Risk Control specialist. Fortunately the inspection went well and there were no major issues. Chris has also delivered presentations at our Annual Congregational Resource Days. Topics have included the ‘Top 10 Risk Control Issues’ facing the Diocese’s churches, ‘Abuse’, and ‘Volunteer Management’. Ecclesiastical’s Executive Leadership team, together with Chris and our Broker, have attended many Annual Bishop’s Dinners. Working closely with both Ecclesiastical and our Broker as a ‘partnership’ has greatly benefitted the Diocese. It demonstrates the trilateral approach that Ecclesiastical fosters and that sets the company apart as a specialist insurer with in-depth understanding and appreciation of the faith communities it serves.

Ecclesiastical is our insurer of choice because we know that the company understands and appreciates the unique nature of our business.
Excellent service and support
Craiglee Nursing Home is a long-term care facility with many vulnerable adults in our care. Our goals are to create an open and supportive environment and to ensure the well-being of residents, staff, volunteers and visitors. Ecclesiastical is our insurer of choice because we know that the company understands and appreciates the unique nature of our business. When one of their Risk Control specialists, Dan Paulikot, came out for a routine risk assessment visit — on a record-breaking, cold January day — he inspected our physical facility from top to bottom. He also spent time with us discussing various risks that are specific to our industry — for example, hiring practices, abuse prevention policies and procedures, and volunteer management practices. As a risk specialist, Dan really appreciated the technologies we have implemented, especially our electronic system for drug dispensing. I was very impressed with the manner and professionalism with which the risk assessment was undertaken and the thorough Risk Management Report we subsequently received. As a result, we are in a far better position to understand the liabilities we face and take the recommended steps to help prevent them — including establishing a hot work permit system to help us manage the work of contractors and instituting regular repeats of police background checks and vulnerable sector checks for staff, employees and volunteers. As an Ecclesiastical customer, we have come to expect excellent service and support. And that is what we get.

Ottawa, Ontario church devastated by employee theft
The friendly and supportive handling of our claim has helped us heal and recover since this terrible occurrence. We would like to thank you for all your efforts over the past several months dealing with our insurance claim. Your hard work and attention to detail made a direct contribution to ensuring the successful outcome of the case and subsequent return of monies to the church. We also want to thank you for the pleasant and professional manner with which you conducted all your business dealings with us. This very stressful time was made much more manageable by your calm and common sense approach to the many issues presented. It is important for you to know that the payment of our claim in full by Ecclesiastical Insurance went a long way to ensuring continued operation of our church, and we are grateful that Ecclesiastical Insurance was able to pay out the claim so promptly. Thank you for your timely and professional handling of our claim.
We were provided with excellent risk control documents as a reference and protection guide and immediately held a meeting to discuss implementation of a business continuity plan and improved risk management. With these resources, we are now able to mitigate future criminal acts and will be better equipped should they happen.
Brandon, Manitoba church faces break-in and potential arson
We were shocked to discover that our church was broken into. The office was ransacked and a computer was stolen. We were even more distraught when we realized that the offenders clearly intended to burn down the church. Automotive solvent was poured on the carpet and pews inside the sanctuary and office, rolled up pieces of paper were placed on the carpet and inside a baseboard heater with temperature raised to 30 degrees Celsius. Fortunately, the breaker tripped and the paper did not catch fire — if it had, the damages to the church would have been catastrophic. A caring representative from Ecclesiastical guided us throughout the whole claims process. They contacted a knowledgeable contractor who advised removing the carpet and provided an estimate of the damages. Emergency cleanup allowed us to resume regular activities without any delays. We were provided with excellent risk control documents as a reference and protection guide and immediately held a meeting to discuss implementation of a business continuity plan and improved risk management. With these resources, we are now able to mitigate future criminal acts and will be better equipped should they happen. We will definitely spread the word to other churches in the area. Thank you so much for the careful consideration extended to our church family at this time. Today we are more aware of the importance of being prepared and are working at some ‘pro-active’ planning. In doing so, your info is very helpful. Thanks again !
I have been extremely happy with the response and service our church community has received thus far and have faith that our repairs and claim will continue to be attended to with such faithful service.
Cavan, Ontario church struck by lightning
We notified our insurer that the church was struck by lightning causing damage to the exterior and interior of the building. We were immediately contacted by a claims representative from Ecclesiastical who provided us with advice and excellent service. Throughout the whole process we were empowered and our suggestions and requests were always looked after. The settlement cheques for the computer and laser printer were issued quickly enabling us to carry out our regular activities. I have been extremely happy with the response and service our church community has received thus far and have faith that our repairs and claim will continue to be attended to with such faithful service.
We promptly forwarded the required information and on the same day received positive instructions to proceed with the repairs. Throughout the whole process, our representative provided quick and reasonable solutions when handling our claim.
St John's Church, Nova Scotia hit by tropical storm
Our church is located right on the harbour which makes it susceptible to high winds. After the tropical storm hit, we noticed extensive damage to the siding of the church steeple. We were anxious to start the repairs, realizing that time was a crucial factor in eliminating further loss to the church. Immediately, we had a contractor come to assess the damages and costs to fix the siding. Ecclesiastical reacted very quickly, requesting photos of the steeple and a copy of the contractor’s estimate for the repairs. Our claims representative also notified us that should the loss exceed $ 10,000, the policy deductible would be waived ! This was excellent news to us. We promptly forwarded the required information and on the same day received positive instructions to proceed with the repairs. Throughout the whole process, our representative provided quick and reasonable solutions when handling our claim. He was very knowledgeable and advised us to obtain a certificate of liability insurance from the contractor doing the repairs. We were surprised at how smooth our claims process was going and how much has been done in such a short amount of time. Two weeks later, we received a cheque payable to the contractor as per our request. Thank you for all you have done. The job on the steeple was excellent. It has been a pleasure dealing with you. I was extremely impressed with your level of professionalism.
I would like to say that everyone involved in the insurance claim to the St Andrew’s steeple conducted themselves in a courteous and professional manner.
St Andrew’s, Campbellford, Ontario—Steeple Repairs Completed in Time for Anniversary Service
I would like to say that everyone involved in the insurance claim to the St Andrew’s steeple conducted themselves in a courteous and professional manner. All aspects of the proposed work were well explained in advance, and all parties to the work, whether it was Ecclesiastical, the contractors or sub-contractors, replied to inquiries on a timely basis. Furthermore, when a commitment was made to a timeline, the work was completed on time. Everyone in the congregation has remarked positively on the results. We are having a re-dedication ceremony in conjunction with our “Anniversary” Sunday service in June, and I have been asked to say a few words about the repairs. I will, at the time, be expressing to the assembled congregation a public thanks to all the parties involved.
