Ecclesiastical wholeheartedly supports the United Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). Adopted unanimously by world leaders in 2000 - with a target date of 2015 - they include “goals and targets on income poverty, hunger, maternal and child mortality, disease, inadequate shelter, gender inequality, environmental degradation and the Global Partnership for Development”. [www.undp.org/mdg/basics.shtml]
Ecclesiastical also support interfaith leaders who continually urge G8 and G20 countries to accelerate their efforts to meet Millennium Development Goals by their target date. On June 20-23, 2010, interfaith religious and spiritual leaders from Canada and around the world will hold their 6th Annual Summit at the University of Winnipeg. It will be held just prior to the G8 and G20 Summits which begin on June 25th in Huntsville and Toronto respectively.
A key objective is to present a joint statement urging G8 and G20 leaders to put the Millennium Development Goals back on track and take decisive steps to eradicate global poverty, ensure environmental sustainability and invest in peace.
Canadians can demonstrate their personal support by signing the World Religions Summit petition at http://petition.faithchallengeg8.com/.
Adding your signature to thousands of others will help the interfaith community bring the message home: namely, that the time for global leaders to “work together for a future that allows all citizens of this planet to thrive” is now.
